Microsoft Project Tips and Tricks
  Topic Tips and Tricks
Build plans with templates to improve consistency and reduce effort
Standardize resource definitions with Resource Pool
Share custom objects such as calendars, views, tables, filters, etc with global area
Customize tables, views, filters, etc to speed data entry
Use detailed Gantt instead of regular Gantt chart
Add task Names to the right of Gantt bars to improve readability of schedules
View project summary task and the summary table to see total project duration, work and cost
Using Outline numbering with summary tasks and sub tasks to manage detail You can hide and reveal subtasks under a summary task.
Replace Task_Id with Task_OutlineNumber
Donít add sub-tasks to a task Rather insert a new task above current task and create current task as first sub-task to avoid losing information.
Let MSP schedule tasks (Donít enter start dates)
Constrain task start dates with Actual Start dates
Use task_type to control calculation of Task_Duration, Assignment_Units and Assignment_work
Use Generic resources early in planning when you donít know who will be working on the project As specific resources are assigned replace the generic resources.
Enter actual progress using the tracking table with the tracking Gantt
Use filters to reduce amount of detail
Capture very detailed task as a checklist in task notes of the parent task
Specify a calendar for your project Calendars identify working time when MSP can schedule tasks and when resources can work. Each resource can have their own calendar.
Avoid entering start dates for tasks Start date is a complex calculation based on task date constraints, precedent types and the critical path calculation. Rather use the actual start date to fix dates.
Turn Autolink option turned off to avoid deleting predecessor tasks when move tasks in a task table
